About the Belgian Society of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology

About BSPHO

The Belgian Society of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology (BSPHO) was founded in 1996 as a collaboration between professionals of the recognized Belgian centres in paediatric haemato-oncology to share expertise and knowledge to improve treatment of childhood cancer and patient care.

The BSPHO has established interdisciplinary working groups for paediatric haemato oncologists, (neuro)surgeons, radiotherapists, researchers and paramedics (pharmacists, psychologists, study coordinators, nurses, dieticians, social workers and revalidation workers).

BSPHO main goals

  • To improve the care and ensure access to the most effective treatments for children and adolescents with cancer in Belgium
  • To organise/strengthen collaboration between experts in paediatric haematology and oncology at the national and international level
  • To promote clinical and fundamental scientific research in the field of paediatric haematology and oncology
  • To promote the development and dissemination of knowledge in the field of paediatric haematology and oncology
  • To represent the professional group of experts in interactions with public and private organisations (national and international)
  • To provide information about childhood cancer to health care providers, patients and their parents, and the general public

BSPHO Activities

  1. 1) Foster Scientific Collaboration

    • Organise national tumour board meetings to discuss patient cases and new treatment options including early phase clinical trials
    • Develop trainings for healthcare professionals and reference information for the family of children with cancer
  2. 2) Facilitate Clinical Trials Access

    • Centralise set-up, funding and follow-up of clinical trials for all paediatric haemato- oncology centres
  3. 3) Advocacy

    • Represent the physicians of the Belgian paediatric haematology-oncology centres and be the central point of contact for national & international authorities.
    • Raise awareness of childhood cancer problems to authorities, general public and partners in collaboration with patient organisations
